How to Prevent Blocked Drains
Nothing is worse than going to wash your hands and having the sink unable to drain the leftover dirt, soap, and water. You are left waiting for the murky water to trickle down, leaving behind a ring of gunk in your previously pristine sink. However, blocked drains are preventable if you know what to do to stop blockages at the source.
5 Tips to Stop Drain Blockages
- Unless you have a food disposal drain, keep food and coffee grounds out of the sink. These will quickly clog your sink up.
- Don’t pour liquid grease down the drain. You might assume that grease is fine to put down your drain because it’s a liquid. Unfortunately, this is the wrong mindset to have. Instead, put leftover grease into a plastic bag and toss it out in the trash. The convenience of the sink isn’t worth the clog.
- Cover your drains with a mesh screen or a hair catcher in your shower or bathroom sink. Hair quickly causes drains to clog up and these tools can help remedy the problem.
- Brush your hair before you shower. You can cut down on the number of hairballs on your shower wall by removing these already loose strands of hair.
- Don’t put random items down the drain. It’s easy to think that a drain will be able to handle a few small pieces of dental floss. However, small items like this will cause major clogs in your sink. Make the extra walk over to the trash instead and stick to only having soap and water go down the drain.
Stop Your Drains From Blocking
Avoiding a bad drain blockage starts with preparation ahead of time. Be aware of what you’re putting down your drain and the steps you can take to avoid a tedious blockage.
